Pizza! Pizza! Come get your warm Pizza!
Fridays are a wonderful time at school because pizza is served! Yum!!
The elementary class has a wonderful program where they provide pizza to the other classes.
Under this program, the elementary students are exposed to what operating a business is all about. The students send out the pizza orders, chart the orders that come in, count the cash and dutifully send out the pizza on time each Friday during lunch.
So, if your child loves pizza (who doesn't) remember to send your orders in by October 1 2008 because pizza service starts October 3 2008.

Back to School Night 2008
Is October 2nd 2008 between 7pm and 8pm.
Its an hour long session parents have with teachers to experience and see first hand what happens when your child is at school. I think its a common feeling every parent and especially new parents feel. That was what I felt when I first dropped my twins off at school 2 years ago. What are they doing and why are they doing that?
Come see the numerous and different lessons available to your child to select and what it entails. Know that no child is left in a corner without doing any lesson but guided by the teachers gently into a task of their ability.
Personally its a tremendously rewarding experience for me. I understand the different completed lessons my kids bring home and the various tasks that they are able to undertake at home.
So, mark your calendars for Back to School Night. You will never look at your child and their accomplishments the same way again. And that's a good thing!

Let's talk about Fundraising,
Without actually fundraising.
They are programs that generate funds for the school when you participate with them.
(1) TARGET: We have all been to the TARGET store and either have the TARGET store credit card or TARGET VISA card. Simply include Children's House id #23084 and we will get 1% credit and 0.5% credit respectively from TARGET. The web link for additional legal information is www.target.com/tcoe
(2) ESCRIP: This is a program that allows you to register the credit cards and/or store cards of your choice online and a percentage of your purchases are credited to Children's House. Different retailers provide a different rebate amount. Children's House id for ESCRIP is #6677203. The web link for additional legal information is http://www.escrip.com/.
(3) BOXTOP4EDUCATION: This is a "cutting" program. There are cutout labels on everyday items that we use at home for example cereal boxes, tissue boxes, baby wipes, etc. Just cutout the labels and drop them at the school office. Each label earns the school 10cents. The web link for additional information is http://www.boxtop4education.com/.
(4) USED CELLPHONES, INK JET, LASER CARTRIDGES: Recycling is the theme of this program. Everyone has a printer of some kind at home or at work. Do not throw them away or send them back to your supplier through its prepaid courier. Children's House sends out old cellphones and cartridges for rebates. Just drop off used cellphones or cartridges to the school office. Different brands bring in different different rebates. The web link for additional information is http://www.fundingfactory.com/.
We come across the items listed below in our everyday lives. Enrolling in them allows Children's House to receive rebates from the retailers. Equals to additional funds for the school. Equals to additional benefits to our children.
Take a moment and look through their websites. It costs you nothing and it benefits your child at Children's House.

Family and School Association
Also commonly know as FSA.
Its a parent-volunteer arm of Children's House, where activities benefiting our children are executed.
The upcoming FSA organized function is the Fall Family Fun Day on October 5th.
The reason for this entry is to seek out parents, who are interested and willing, to part with a little of their time each month to volunteer in FSA run activities. WE WANT YOU!
(3) FUN LUNCH: This is a program where parents do a little cooking and prepare lunch for the children (only those who sign up) at school. There are volunteers who cook and volunteers who distribute the lunch.
(4) LIBRARY: This is a program where parents spend an hour each month (Wednesdays only) to assist either the Toddler, Preschool or Kindergarten class in selecting a book to bring home for the week. The volunteers would have to record the books selected, books returned and send out reminder notes for books not returned. For this program, the volunteer would never be assigned to the class where your child belongs to.
(5) SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION: This is a program that manages the external surroundings of our school. Volunteers would have to plant new plants, perform a little weed control among our flower beds and all else that makes our external surroundings pleasant for our children at play.
(6) ROOM AMBASSADORS: This is where a parent (or two) volunteers their time to act as liaison between parent and teacher. An important avenue where concerns can be voiced, be the main emergency phone chain contact. Organizing snack day program for the class and lastly shopping for gifts for our teachers.
(7) SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB: This is a program where books can be purchased from SCHOLASTIC directly at a discounted rate. The volunteer would have to compile and distribute monthly catalogs. After which receive the orders, send a compiled order to Scholastic and redistribute orders to the appropriate family when the ordered books are received.
The school is always looking for parent volunteer for our FSA activities. Join us in making Children's House a more fulfilling experience for your child today, be an FSA volunteer.

Name Tracing 2
First Scholastic
I am sure that like me most of you have received your scholastic catalogs by now. Scholastic is an avenue for us to purchase books for ourselves or for our children's class.
When you purchase from scholastic, the class gets bonus points which the teachers can in turn use those points to purchase books for the classrooms. Should you feel a tad generous, get some new books for your child's classroom.
You can watch children being captivated by a teacher reading to them. Mrs. Hepler is always reading to her class as the school day winds to a close. (Mrs. Hepler's class is easy to peer into because of the huge windows)

Number Tracing

Another new one, Number Tracing. It was from 0 to 9 using the tracing paper. The same method as Name Tracing.

Bag Day - September 24
This is the first bag day of the school year. Remember to tuck a shopping sized bag for your child to bring to school.
If your child created any art work or activity they will be able to bring it home for you to proudly display around the house or work.
There will always be the "Children's House Times" published to update you on the happenings at school.
I hope you enjoy your first bag day as much as I do mine. Like a child on their birthday, I eagerly sort through their artwork and read the "Children's House Times" like its a letter from the Pope. Okay, maybe not like its from the Pope.

Our Elementary Class (2008-2009)
Today, writing for us is Cindy Tenaglia, a "veteran" parent of Children's House. Her oldest son, Gabriel and younger daughter Sophia are currently attending the elementary class under Mrs. Enoch-Rex.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our Elementary class has began and the kids (we have two in elementary) are glad to be back in their classroom. Gabe is in 5th grade and Sophie is in 3rd grade. It's a two-room school house, as cozy and homey as you can imagine. What it has that our home doesn't have is lots of great Montessori materials.
In the beginning of the school year, a lot of time is spent on community-building activities. I cannot say enough about how loving and supportive of one another this group of 6-11 year olds are. True to Maria Montessori's vision of raising up peaceful young citizens, the elementary class guides the children further in developing good communication skills and in really looking out for one another (something you won't find much of in public school!)
During the first few weeks of school all the children (and the Directresses as well) take turns to bring in a special bag that contains items from home that they have chosen to share with the class. Photos, books, toys , trophies etc., that will help their classmates to know them better. A kind of introduction to new students and an update for old friends, if you can put it that way.
In my mind, one of the most unique and wonderful parts of the Montessori Elementary Curriculum is something called The Five Great Lessons. These lessons are presented each year for the lower elementary students and these are “big” concepts!
First Great Lesson-The birth of the Universe and the Big Bang
Second Great Lesson-The beginnings of life on earth
Third Great Lesson-The coming of human beings
Fourth Great Lesson-The story of writing and Communication in Signs
Fifth Great Lesson-The story of numbers
The first Great Lesson is rather dramatic and involves some physical demonstration and hands on activity. It involves a balloon filled with glitter and stars and the popping with a pin to demonstrate the Big Bang. There are also demonstrations using solids and liquids to show how the continents and the oceans are first formed. This lesson leads to the study of astronomy, meteorology, principles of physics and chemistry as well as exploration of geology: types of rocks, minerals, land forms and eras of the earth. The further study of geography also springs from this first lesson.
The second Great Lesson revolves around the Timeline of Life, a long chart with information and
pictures of microorganisms, plants and animals that live or lived, on earth. The great diversity of life is emphasized.
The third Great Lesson uses a human timeline and talks about the 3 gifts that make humans special: a mind to imagine, hands to work, a heart to love. From this lesson comes exploration of ancient civilizations and the needs of early humans.
The last two Great Lessons explore the development of language (from pictographs, hieroglyphs,
early alphabets to the invention of the printing press) and the Story of Numbers or History of
Mathematics. This Lesson begins with the earliest civilizations and their numeric systems. It continues with a look at different numbering systems ending with the decimal system we use today.
As you can see, this is BIG information for still small people... What has always appealed to me about this approach to education is that it credits all children with having big, curious minds. I know that our kids sometimes entertain the big questions and when they ponder out loud I hear the seeker and the philosopher within emerge. This early introduction to all the facets of our history allows them to explore and inquire at their own developmental level. Materials for the further exploration of topics that have caught their interest are in the classroom. For the older kids access to the Internet for research is encouraged and supported.
This is just a peek into the day of an elementary student.
Their day is broken into two work periods. Mrs. Enoch Rex writes down each child's assignments, including the due date, on a large index card. It is up to the child to manage their time appropriately in order to get their “works” done on time. Once their "works" are completed, they initial each task and one of the teachers checks their work. What an early lesson in time management they get! (This is the secret Sixth Great Lesson!)
Last year as a forth-grader Gabe began to work from his own Day-Planner, a further step towards independence in managing his work.
I am always glad to answer any questions you might have about Children's House Elementary Program.

Thank you Parents!
From the raffle ran by Sandy Gibson at last year's End-Of-Year Picnic, we raised sufficient funds to get the following 2 murals done.
The first mural is just outside Mrs. Park's classroom. Its clearly visible to all who come to school, play in the playground or just driving by.

The first mural is just outside Mrs. Park's classroom. Its clearly visible to all who come to school, play in the playground or just driving by.
The second mural is on the classroom door of Mrs. Fairfield (whom we all know as Ms. Lauren). Its slightly secluded however all of us who wait patiently for Mrs. Boggi's class and Mrs. Fairfields class to dismiss would surely appreciate the lightness that the mural brings.

Most important is that all the kids LOVE IT...
So,
Thank you, Sandy for all the work you did to get us the wonderful murals.
And
Thank you, parents for your generous contribution without which this would not be possible.

Yes, yes, yes, its here.
Its Full Sessions for my preschoolers. 8:45am to 3pm. Do not be late for school.

Name Tracing

A process that allows each child to work on writing out their name using several sheets of tracing paper. Should your child decidedly work on this throughout the year you will notice the clear difference from now until the end of the school year. My daughter has done this last year as well and when she first "wrote" her name and brought her work home, I could hardly recognize it. See what a year of hard work can yield.

My toddler
Jonathan has been enjoying full session school for 2 days now. He is still adjusting and being as young as he is, I am limiting my expectations of him completing his dissertation tomorrow.
Being the youngest in the family with a stay at home mum and 2 bossy sisters, he gets away from doing his fair share of "chores". However, I have to boast that he has learnt things from school, its like a light bulb clicked in the mere 2 weeks that he has been there.
(1) Jonathan now knows where the garbage bins are and actually disposes garbage.
(2) Jonathan even wipe up spills.
There will be more that Jonathan will learn and he will continue to surprise me with his new found skills. This again reaffirms my belief that children should be in school to learn from their teachers and peers. School works!

Fall Family Fun Day
The lists are up.
Its time for us to volunteer some items towards the Fall Family Fun Day. Simple things that would make the day spectacular for all the children and families of Children's House.
Fall Family Fun Day is a good opportunity for us all to be outside enjoying the fresh air, crafts and other activities and to socialize with other families of Children's House.
Come and meet our new board members, new families and just have a blast.

Reminders for the new school year
Seen this morning at Mrs. Hepler's classroom doorstep.
(1) Have you brought in your child's spare clothes to be stored in their cubbies at school?
(2) Have you completed all admission paperwork for the school year 2008-2009?
I am guilty of Number (1). Glad to report that I have packed the spare clothes for both my girls and will drop them off at school tomorrow. Phew!!!

"Crown"

This is a "crown" done by Theresa is Mrs. Boggi's class. I say "crown" because the styling varies, sometimes it looks one way and other times it looks like something else. The detailing is done by Theresa using scissors. No matter how Theresa sizes it she can never get it for fit my head and how she has tried.
This is one of the more popular activites the kids enjoy, I see lots of "crowns" around.
Punched out shape necklace

This is a triangle punched out by using a pencil-like instrument and threaded to form a necklace. The various shape is pre-drawn and comes in all colors for your child's selection.
This is done by Isabelle in Mrs. Hepler's class, a slow and tedious process I would think. However Isabelle enjoys it because I have 3 necklaces so far.
Metal Inset
This is a page from a metal inset booklet done by Isabelle in Mrs. Hepler's class. Its basically a circular metal piece she holds down on the white piece of paper. With the other hand she traces the circular shape. A coordination process which is not as easy as it looks especially when you are in preschool. There are several additional shapes for example square, rectangle and triangle that I have seen so far.

Full Session begins for the Toddlers - September 15th
Monday is the big day for the toddlers, its the commencement of their full sessions. No more running around picking up at different times. Half Day students get picked up at 11:45am and Full Day students get picked up at 3pm. Fixed, no more variation in schedules.
Full Day students do not forget to pack a lunch or whatever that can be eaten in one sitting. Mental note to self.
The crying in the toddler room as come down significantly and everyone is bravely exploring together. I am pleased that Jonathan is doing better at school although he has a long way to go in terms of picking up self help skills and language skills. However that is just scratching the surface of the skills he will pick up in Ms. Lauren's class by the end of the year.
I hope everyone is enjoying Children's House so far. You will be satisfied as I am.

Volunteering for the school
Have you volunteered?
I have. I have submitted my name to volunteer for Fun Lunch. Fun Lunch is prepared and distributed by parents to the kids. Fun Lunch has been led by Chrissy Beffert for the last 2 years that my kids have been at school.
Fun Lunch allows the children to have a "different" kind of lunch but above all it allows parents a break from preparing lunch for their children.
I have also volunteered to help with Scholastic for the toddler class. I love the books that are available for purchase. It is not necessary to purchase everytime a flyer is distributed though it is preferred. This is because the school gets credit for the books you purchase and the credit will benefit our children.
Whatever you volunteer for, it benefits only our children. Lets not wait for some other parent to volunteer, lets put our name down and help our children NOW.

Welcome Back (All Students)
God Bless the teachers...
Because
September 11 is welcome back all students day.
My twin girls, Theresa and Isabelle, are going back to school.
On that note, I want to take this time to pause reflect on the date itself. Although seven years have passed, I am sure that the pain that family and friends feel is indescribable. Thus for all who suffered a loss, I would like us all to say a prayer. A prayer of peace for the family that remains behind and the family lost.
God bless and Peace be upon you.

School year 2008-2009
Today is the 3rd day since school started for the new students of Children's House of Bucks County.
By the way, did you catch a picture of yourself and your child posted on our school's website taken during Orientation?
http://www.chbcmontessori.com/special_event.cfm?spcevent_id=40
Summer was wonderful for the kids and for us as a family to have spent time together enjoying the sun and fun summer activities and outings.
This is a difficult time for most students, and maybe even some parents, who are new to our school life. The jitters of a new environment where the safety and familiarity of home is abruptly taken away for a few hours each day.
I know this because my youngest son, Jonathan, is attending the toddler program at Children's House. This is the first time Jonathan has ever been without his parents, his older sisters, his home and thrust into a totally new environment. Jonathan has to begin to learn to be independent without the comfort and support of his family by his side.
The toddler program lead by Ms. Lauren and Ms. Stacy is in its 4th year and slowly but surely Ms. Lauren and Ms. Stacy will reel them into a world of wonder and discovery. Jonathan will experience this as soon as he stops crying.
To all the students and parents brace up and look brightly to the next day as we journey together in search of knowledge and friendship.
By the way, did you catch a picture of yourself and your child posted on our school's website taken during Orientation?

Summer was wonderful for the kids and for us as a family to have spent time together enjoying the sun and fun summer activities and outings.
However its equally wonderful that school has started again. There is a time for play and now its time for work.
