Crockpot Seafood Chowder

Mrs. Hepler's class had a special snack on Tuesday. The entire class had worked hard doing loads of prep work on Monday. Skinning and dicing potatoes, carrots, celery, various seafood. Mrs. D'Agostino had brought the prepared food home to be slow cooked on her crock pot.

A warm and delicious bowl of seafood chowder was their reward for all their hard work. Thank you all parents who contributed to this feast.

Here's the recipe should you want to try making it at home.
YIELD: 4 - 6 servings.

Ingredients:
1/4 lb of shrimp
1/4 lb of tilapia
1/4 lb of bay scallops
1/4 lb of calamari

3 large potatoes diced
3 large carrots diced
3 large stalks of celery chopped
1 container of chicken broth
1/2 can of evaporated milk
1 can of mushroom soup
1 onion chopped
1 stick of butter
1/2 can of corn
pepper to taste

Directions:
Put chopped and diced vegetables into crock pot, peel shrimp and cut into large pieces.

Cut tilapia into large pieces, cut calamari into rings, add all fish (leave scallops whole) into crock pot

Add chicken broth, mushroom soup, evaporated milk, pepper and corn into crock pot and stir.

Cook on high for 4 hours, check if veggies are cooked thoroughly before adding the butter, then cook on low

Breakfast with Someone Special

Did everyone who attended the Breakfast enjoyed it as much as my kids enjoyed hanging out with their friends on a non-school day?

It was an exhausting day for the parents who volunteered and ran the event. It was very nicely done, (pat on the back of our School Co-President, Sandy Gibson) and fun was had all round.

The entertainment by Mr. George, at halftime, was a nice end to a wonderful breakfast.

To all the parents and students who attended, thank you!

They take only cash because counting the cash is part of the learning portion of this "business". The will promptly distributed the pizza to their respective classes each Friday, rain or shine.

All sign up sheets and monies are due January 23rd 2009. Drop by the office if you have any question.

End of Observation Week

Did everyone had fun observing and participating with their child during observation week.

I sure did at least for 2 of my 3 kids. Jolly observed Theresa in Mrs. Park's class, hence I have no first hand report to blog about.

Isabelle in Mrs. Hepler class was doing her lessons with a lot of focus compared to me who was distracted by the Bolt conversation that was going on and a spill on the floor. Isabelle was not fazed by the going ons around her. Isabelle and I did a snowman coloring, a number tracing, used our tweezers on some innocent looking sardines and we read a book about bugs together. It was wonderful to have a one-on-one with Isabelle as it gets hard with 3 kids around all the time. Seeing a side of her working well and focusing on her lessons. I am very proud of Isabelle and all that she has accomplished under Mrs. Hepler's guidance.

Jonathan in Ms. Lauren's class was surprisingly collected. I had envisioned him just clamoring to go home the moment he saw me, just goes to show that what we fear might not be reality. Jonathan and I worked on several different puzzles, used a little hand sweeper to clear up little debris from the floor, polished a shoe and even squeegeed the classroom mirror. Jonathan is growing up learning new skills every day and confidence in doing them. He still has a lot to learn and under Ms. Lauren's firm but patient hand, he will get there.

Ah, how I love school. Glorious school...

Birthday Books

My son turned 2 over the weekend and his current fascination with dinosaur prompted me to pick up the above books to be donated to Ms. Lauren's class library. Hopefully Jonathan will learn from his favourite animals how to behave in school and cultivate some table manners... One can always hope, right?

"Proud Parents"

We are "proud parents" to the polar bears of The Philadelphia Zoo. Thank you to all parents of Mrs. Hepler's class for your financial contribution without which this would not be possible. So, if you are visiting The Philadelphia Zoo, please drop in to check on our polar bears...

Hot Lunch for 2009

The schedule for Hot Lunch will be out soon. Might you consider including your child for hot lunch this year?

The nominal fee of $3.50 provides your child with lunch and bottled water. The small profit that is made goes to providing the teachers with for example, the Teacher Luncheon we had in December of 2008.

The teachers included our directessess, our assistant directresses, our lunch helpers and all our office staff. They had a simple fare that included sandwiches, salads, coffee and of course your wonderful donated desserts (cookies, cupcakes, brownies and tarts).

The Hot Lunch program is always looking for supporters and volunteers.
Hot Lunch contact person is Chrissy Beffert. She can be reached at cak37@comcast.net.

Fruit Day

Psst...

I just got this information from Sandy Gibson. I am so guilty of always seeing the notice for Fruit Day but always meant to ask but never did.

So, here it is..

Fruit Day falls on the first Thursday of each month.
Each child is encouraged to bring in some fruit to prepare and share with their friends in class. You do not need to bring in enough fruit for the entire class as the goal is for everyone to share the fruit they brought in with their friends.

The first fruit day of the year is just 4 days away.
